Brave Grandfather Fights Off Burglars And Gets Arrested

An unlucky burglar broke into the wrong house, or so it is believed, and came up against a fifty nine year old man wielding a knife.  The householder struck the burglar and the man died soon afterwards after he was dumped in the street by his cohorts in the crime.

The masked man, John Bennell, broke into a home in Pendlebury, Salford, at around midnight.  He and three others in the gang were thought to be after a jackpot winner who is believed to live in the same area.  However, they got the wrong address and came up against the homeowner, Peter Flanagan.  They fled when Mr. Flanagan fought back.

Someone in the house called the police emergency line and they arrived soon after.  The homeowner was arrested on suspicion of murder but he has been released pending what the police call ‘further investigations’.

Bennell was already on bail for another burglary when he was involved in a theft in Tamworth, Staffordshire.  Sources who know about this case believe that the intended victim there was a professional gambler.

The bingo jackpot winner, whose house should have been targeted, has expressed some alarm since the police visited him soon after to warn him that they believe an attempt to rob him had been on the cards.  The police are still investigating this aspect of the case but have not released any details.  They did, however, tell this bingo winner not to be worried but he is finding this a little hard to come to terms with.

The burglar’s estranged father, Garry Bennell, apologized for his son’s behaviour, but this does nothing for Mr. Flanagan of course.  He is now on police bail until the end of July and this all seems a little unfair to say the least.

This father of three, and a grandfather come to that, was at home when these burglars struck.  One wonders what anyone else would have done being outnumbered four to one by young men who were intent on doing their dirty deeds.  In fact, the homeowner would probably have been woken from sleep at this hour too so one must make some allowances for what transpired here.

These brave, balaclava dressed thugs ran off when Mr. Flanagan showed them that they were not in for an easy ride.  They carried their friend along with them but dumped him somewhere else and left him to his own devices.  The police are still looking for these three.
